The Charleston move is part of a broader British strategy to hang on to the southern colonies, at least, now that the war is stalemated in Pennsylvania and New York. Web43–410: The Romans. In AD 43, the Roman emperor Claudius launched an invasion of Britain, and the Romans ended up staying for almost four centuries. 1066–1485: The Medieval. In 1066, the Norman king William the Conqueror invaded Britain and declared himself king, transforming British society. 1837–1901: The Victorians.
