WebObject history. The Great Assembly Hall was built in 1886 by the philanthropist and social reformer Frederick Charrington. It was a place for religious meetings as well as a hub for community activities, and could hold up to 5000 people. It was destroyed by bombing in 1941, but Charrington's work continues in the Tower Hamlets Mission.
