WebbI don't think you need to take it out. You can try picking up in the slipped stitches, more than one in some. You can also try going 1 1/2 or 2 stitches deep. I would play around with it and see what works. If you double the size of the border, you can fold it over like a facing and cover the rough edge created by picking up stitches.
